The Brief

We worked alongside both Carmarthenshire County Council and Dyfed Powys Police to create a short film for Anti-Social Awareness Week and what is being done to tackle anti-social behaviour focusing on the Tyisha area of Llanelli.

Anti-Social Awareness Week was set up by local authorities due to the rise in anti-social behaviour and the issues that it can cause as a result. Tyisha is one of the most deprived areas in the Llanelli region with statistics from Crimesafe UK ranking the area within the bottom 6% of neighbourhoods in the UK in terms of safety with Tyisha also being ranked F as a high-risk crime area. Anti-social behaviour has been one of the biggest issues facing the Tyisha community with this being the fourth most reported crimes in the area.

It has become even more important to raise awareness and the impact of anti-social behaviour in society and that it’s important that more is done to prevent it and help make the Tyisha community a safer place.

The Process

We opted to do create this short film in an interview style format and provide subtitles in order to deliver an informative message that was easy for the public to understand. In the film there were a range of interviews from individuals within Dyfed Powys Police, Carmarthenshire County Council and with the general public in order to highlight problems and potential solutions. We also managed to get shots of local authorities patrolling the area and demonstrating examples of what could be classified as anti-social behaviour.

We documented some of the main causes of anti-social behaviour such as noise disturbance, fly-tipping and dog fouling and the issues that this can bring as a result. We sought to highlighted how important raising awareness to anti-social behaviour is and this was a story worth covering in order to highlight the real stories that resonate with the community.

It was vital to gather a range of perspectives as to what can be done to make a positive difference in the community. In our interview with Vanessa, we highlighted how important it was that the public speak up and make local authorities know that issues exist in the area and also advised people to join community groups on social media to share experiences that could perhaps resonate with others and together communities can make a huge difference.

The key message of this film was about highlighting what is recognised as anti-social behaviour and that more is being done to try and prevent this with deterrents being put in place.

The Result

In conclusion we documented the key issues behind the challenges faced by the Llanelli community in regards to anti-social behaviour and having looked at the impact that it can have in communities it is vital that we got this message out to help spread awareness of the issues that can arise.

The informative style worked well for this piece and represented the values of both Carmarthenshire County Council and Dyfed Powys Police in putting people first and helping shape and deliver a positive service for the public good.

The film emphasised the importance of tackling anti-social behaviour in the community and that local authorities have the power and resources to implement tougher measures on those that cause issues in the area.

This film was hugely important to the cause and Carmarthenshire County Council were very happy with the quality of the film.
