Careers In Construction
Morganstone
The Brief
We completed a film for Morganstone focusing on careers in construction and educating young people about both the industry and the variety of ways to break into the industry.
There were several storytelling opportunities in this project as we spoke to several members of staff at the company about how they got into the industry and how they have enjoyed what they have done as part of Morganstone. On their website Morganstone list that they are a multi disciplined organisation that look to attract talent from a range of backgrounds and that there are a variety of ways that people can break into construction.
At Morganstone they look to put employees at the heart of what they do as they felt it was crucial to explain how they look to create a great environment that allows people to thrive in their respective roles.
The Process
We documented several stories about the industry and how many of the people never envisaged their careers in the industry before Morganstone. One of the main reasons that we felt this video was so successful was how the stories we captured challenged the typical stereotypes that exist around the construction industry.
The most high-profile element we addressed was how there are more opportunities for women in construction as the video showed that there are now roughly 300,000 women working in construction and a variety of roles. All the women in our video explained how much they have enjoyed their time in the industry and that they previously hadn’t really thought of careers in construction. One individual we spoke to as part of the film was Hannah Breen who reflected on wanting to become a teacher but ending up working in the construction industry after taking some time out to look at career options and has really enjoyed the industry. From the video Morganstone have been hugely committed to increasing the number of women in the sector and that sense of wanting to make a difference was demonstrated throughout.
Construction is also an industry which is constantly developing and looking for ways that things can be done differently, one example of this is the use of drone capture which is something we’ve embraced at Stori Cymru as a new way of creating short form films and drone capture is becoming more and more popular in the way the construction industry operates. Drone capture is a hugely beneficial tool in construction and has been used in areas such as risk assessments, site surveying and design.
We also highlighted that there is something for everyone in the industry emphasising both site and office roles and that there are a number of different skills that can be very useful for the those wishing to work in the sector. We managed to capture the stories of both Kara and Taylor Morgan and how they had done university degrees in law but found that they both had several transferable skills that could be implemented into construction, these stories were highly valuable for the film and gave it an extra layer of authenticity be being able to prove points with real stories.
The Result
We managed to create a film that successfully tackled stereotypes, the positive things about working in construction, how the industry is modernising and the variety of roles there are for people.
The fact that so many were prepared to speak on camera also helped capture the general culture that Morganstone have looked to create amongst its employees. Morganstone were keen to get these stories across in the video to provide a proven body of work in providing opportunities for people. They placed a great emphasis on storytelling which was perfect for us to have as a framework for the film and we could really focus on delivering these stories in an authentic way.
This film was very successful in highlighting both personal stories and how the landscape of the construction industry is changing and Morganstone have put themselves at the centre of making a difference.
