The Brief

We were asked to complete a short film for Cegin Y Bobl about their initiatives to get more Children cooking in Wales.

Cegin Y Bobl are a Welsh charity looking to provide cooking skills to communities and giving people the confidence to take up cooking. Cegin Y Bobl provide a range of services such as cooking lessons in schools and other sessions for adults and families.

The Process

In our short film for Cegin Y Bobl we highlight one example of the classes that they provide for children in school and that they receive guidance from professional chefs in terms of what they cook. The healthy and nutritious meals that children have learned to cook in these classes are vital as Wales is dealing with what has been described as an obesity epidemic in the country, research by UK innovation agency Nesta shows that on estimation over a third of the Welsh population is obese, higher than any other nation in the UK. Furthermore, Public Health Network Cymru referred to figures from National Survey for Wales data that across the year 2021/22 “Only 30% of adults reported that they ate at least five portions of fruit or vegetables the previous day” demonstrating the scale of the issue.

Cegin Y Bobl are looking to address these issues by launching classes that appeal to the public and get both children and adults to take up an interest in cooking. In our film we highlighted how Cegin Y Bobl are making a difference in schools with passionate and experienced chefs going into to schools and teaching kids healthy and nutritious recipes. The chefs are also providing the children the opportunity to participate by offering support to the children as they learn how to cook believing that practical experience is more beneficial than just giving a talk.

The format of the video made the message easy to understand with a mix of large text and footage demonstrating the children in the video cooking and that they enjoyed the learning experience. This brings hope that by making the education fun and interactive this will inspire kids to continue learning to cook.

The Result

Our film demonstrated both the key threats that Cegin Y Bobl see in the world and how exactly they are tackling the issues. It was vital to get the message across that as a society we can all do our bit to tackle the issue of obesity and by providing additional services that make cooking more accessible and affordable. Cegin Y Bobl constantly try to push this message throughout all the work that they have done.
